Scouring Europe for alpine spruce and hard maple, exceptional quality wood for repair projects and new double basses  –  as soon as COVID subsides we will return to the home of string instrument’s finest tonewood – the Bavarian Alps.  European spruce  grows on the upper slopes of the Alps and harvested by traditions practiced for generations – the wood is cut according to moon phases, the descending and waning moon considered the prime opportunity.   Some wonderfully long-existing family firms in Germany have specialized in acquiring, sawing, and storing wood for string instruments.

Inquiries invited, please contact Mike to discuss repair concern, restoration project, or commission an original new instrument at 860-685-1621 or email
